In this guest-artists workshop, learn from Denver printmaker Tony Ortega, as we prepare for an upcoming Connections to the Land exhibition. Students will paint an image with opaque etching ink onto a smooth Plexiglas plate. The painted image will be transferred onto black printing paper using a printing press. The result will give the artwork a texture not possible by direct marking/painting onto the paper. The monotype that is pulled off the plate always has an element of surprise, and the final result on paper may look quite different than the image on the plate. One print from each student will be eligible to be displayed in the Museum’s print exhibit from March – May. All classes meet at the Museum’s Beet Education Center at 201 E 5th Street.

In this guest-artists workshop, learn from Denver printmaker Tony Ortega, as we prepare for an upcoming Connections to the Land exhibition. Learn how to give prints a new look with stencils. Stencils can be used to block out some areas of an original plate or highlight another area, creating new effects and dimensions. If you have an old plate or two, bring them and see how stencils can change the final product. If you don’t have a previous print plate to use, come learn how to monoprint with stencils. One print from each student will be eligible to be displayed in the Museum’s print exhibit from March – May. All classes meet at the Museum’s Beet Education Center at 201 E 5th Street.

3-Day Workshop
3/1 5pm-8pm
3/2 8am-3pm
3/3 8am-3pm
A clay print is started by building a slab of clay in a wood frame and allowing the clay to become leather hard. Colored slips are applied and textures are embedded and carved into the surface of the clay. A substrate of polyester interfacing is placed over the design and hand pressure is applied. A thin layer of colored clays adhere to the substrate. The print is permanently bonded to the surface which becomes a multi-colored archival, monotype distinguished by its velvety surface and rich color! There is nothing like it!

(APC) meetings are casual gatherings that focus on building a supportive network of artists and creators.
Gatherings follow a simple critique model that is driven by an "essential question" by each artist. The artist asks a question to the group to guide them in providing feedback that meets their creative needs. Questions may be as general or specific as each artist desires -- ranging from assistance with creating titles, logistics of installing work, editing statements, and suggesting materials -- to larger questions about concept, visual impact, or narrowing down all your many ideas for your next project.
The month gathering in March will have a special focus on printmaking processes, but all types of art are welcome.
Please bring:
-Artwork, sketches or creative projects
-Questions or problems that need solutions!
-Snack or beverage to share
Parking available in small lot between RDP and firehouse. Additional parking along 16th.
RSVP to faithwilliamsart@gmail.com or join the Facebook Group - "(APC) Artist Peer Critiques" https://www.facebook.com/groups/505241912831405/

What if I told you that a common packaging material you may already obtain on your grocery run makes for one of the most versatile printmaking substrates of all time?! Though the Tetra Pak's controversial design will place most in landfills after a single use storing liquids like broth and milk, the container itself has become coveted by eco-centric artists worldwide because its lining contains a unique layering of materials that make an exquisite composite to render for printed artwork. Tetra Pak prints embody the characteristics of several printmaking mediums in one. They offer a rich quality of line, deep solid values, and an incredible amount of room for play.
Please join me in this one-day workshop as I share various techniques I’ve established in my own practice, then tap into your own sensibilities with the chance to try your own hand at unlocking the treasure of this glorious reclaimed trash!

Printmaking is a process-based medium that typically revolves around the printing press, a piece of heavy machinery usually with limited access. Because of this challenge, printmakers discover their community at a university or college, a public arts center or a garage, eagerly sharing information and resources. Uncommon Collective refers to the printmakers in this show who are spread throughout the state, yet are all part of the same family. The content that drives each artist’s work is unique, and the need for comradery within the medium is present for all.
This exhibition is in conjunction with the 2024 Month of Printmaking (Mo'Print), a bi-annual celebration of printmaking meant to educate and inspire, showcasing contemporary and traditional printmaking. Over the years the event has expanded to communities beyond the Denver area, including a broad range of artists. During Mo'Print, printmaking takes center stage at art galleries, art centers, and other venues across Colorado. The Kuehl Gallery & A.R. Mitchell Museum are an integral part of bringing the celebration of printmaking to Southern Colorado.
Featuring Artists: Jennifer Ghormley co-curator (Denver), Johanna Mueller co-curator (Greeley), Theresa Haberkorn (Boulder), Victoria Eubanks (Denver), Judy Gardner (Arvada), Katharine McGuinness (Denver), Melanie Yazzie (Erie), Carol Till (Wheat Ridge), Jean Gumpper (Colorado Springs), Mark Lunning (Denver), Joshua Butler (Grand Junction), Tony Holmquist (Durango), Amanda Palmer (Trinidad), Arna Miller (Trinidad), Rhiannon Alpers (Denver)

Judy Gardner demo and workshop:
Judy’s work combines multiple printmaking techniques, including solar plate intaglio and relief, linocut, stencil monotype, stamping and chin colé. She often incorporates laser etching and cutting in the creation of her plates, stencils and stamps. The workshop will cover various techniques for building interesting textures in stencil monotypes and a method of dry chin colé which enables the use of unsized papers which don’t handle soaking well. She will also be discussing her thoughts on the incorporation of technology in the creation of printmaking plates and tools while still retaining the feel of the artist's hand.
$50 all materials included.
Adult 16+ class.
In this class participants will work with a linocut process that involves cutting the block into separate pieces that then fit back together, allowing the printer to use two or more colors on the same pass through the press.
