Nowhere

On view January 16 through February 15

Pablo's Coffee

1300 Pennsylvania St, Denver, CO, 80203

Having immigrated to the United States at a young age, I didn’t feel attached to Vietnam, yet felt like an outsider in my new “home.” In my work, I create liminal spaces, a state of in-between-ness and ambiguity that encourages transition, through fictitious landscapes to explore the reconstruction of cultural identity filtered by memories and feelings of displacement and isolation.

Using silhouettes from found vessels as a framing device, I create a visual language that fuses these two worlds, creating a space called Nowhere. Existing between dream and reality, mind and matter. Nowhere started with the concept "not from here, nor from there" and is a collection of mind maps, with symbols and memories nested within one another, a mix of old and new. The commentary focuses on consumerism, constructions of cultural identity and my reflections on contemporary events.

Bursting Botanicals

D'art Gallery

900 Santa Fe Dr., Denver, CO, 80204

Tricia Soderberg draws inspiration from the wonder of botanical gardens, channeling their vibrant energy into stunning works of art. As she strolls past blossoming flowers and verdant leaves, Soderberg feels a profound sense of renewal. This passion shines through in her mesmerizing monotype prints. Soderberg employs a layered mixed media technique to cultivate an illusion of depth and movement. She embraces the randomness of the creative process, inking and pressing real and artificial plants and hand-cut stencils onto plexiglass plates to be printed on archival paper. Soderberg often incorporates collaged elements, enhancing each print's unique personality. These imaginative interpretations invigorate the senses, transporting viewers into an oasis of light and life. Her work breathes new vitality into fragments of the natural world we so often take for granted.

Opening Reception: February 22

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Leyden Jar Gallery

The study of ecology stems from the relationship of living organisms and their environment.  In this project, I invite participants to ponder the areas of ecology surrounding them, whether that be in the natural or man made world and how we coexist in our surroundings or with other objects.  Is our relationship with the world surrounding us and the coexistence between us, the environment, the government, or even our society balanced?  This project is open ended in the way you interpret areas of your own ecology.

Stay Puft: New Work by Chinn Wang

Opening Reception: February 23

5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Dairy Arts Center

2590 Walnut St, Boulder, CO, 80302

Chinn Wang’s new artwork, 'Stay Puft', continues the artist’s exploration into transitions in life and death. Wang’s installation plays with ideas of mortality using the character of an auspicious Chinese mythological creature, the qilin, a being that appears as a harbinger and celebration of the birth of a great leader or the passing of a wise sage. The benevolent qilin prances lightly upon puffs emanating from a collection of seemingly banal everyday objects – a fireplace bellows, a teapot, a perfume bottle, a bicycle horn – embracing the last gasps of air from these objects as its celestial pathway. This acceptance of the futility of life mirrors the artist’s own grappling with inevitable loss and the perpetual evaporation of our memories. In 'Stay Puft', Wang employs coded visual language and symbolic iconography to further her investigation of legacy, history, and the tethered and cyclical experience of many immigrant families.

A Hero Emerges

On view February 26 through March 8

Visual Arts Complex, University of Colorado, Boulder, King Family Cases, Third Floor

1085 18th St, Boulder, CO, 80302

In Andi Newberry’s exhibit “A Hero Emerges,” lithographs, screenprints, and mixed media works explore how her memories flex and distort, interactions and conversations are dwelled upon to the point of fixation, and life gets infused with a sense of dramatics that stems from the stories we tell and convince ourselves we could belong to. With humor and poetics, her pieces attract common threads and beckon dotted lines to connect them, whether through literal stray threads or frenetic mark-making. With recent implementations of alternative approaches involving handmade paper, textiles, and monotype, Newberry’s love for process and experimentation fuels her depictions of memory—in all its depth and fluidity and complications—to dazzle.

Guest Wall at Valkarie Gallery

Opening Reception: March 1

Valkarie Gallery

445 S. Saulsbury St, Louisville, CO, 80027

James Dormer will be featured on the Guest Wall at Valkarie Gallery from Feb.28-Mar.31, 2024. He is a contemporary American printmaker/painter.  While the essence of his creative work is found in nature, it is not an attempt to literally portray the local landscape or its inhabitants.  Rather, his images become abstractions of his experiences, arrived at through memory, automatism and the subconscious.  He has always been intrigued with the materials of printmaking—copper, limestone, mordant and ink.  A vague idea, chance and the extraordinary potential of these elements are compelling considerations. Dormer is an Emeritus Professor of Art at Colorado State University where he chaired the Printmaking program for twenty-five years.  His paintings, drawings and prints have been exhibited in over 140 National and International juried and invitational exhibitions.  He has been a member of The Boston Printmakers since 2007.  James lives and has his studio in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Each artist renders these memories, transitions, and observations through a variety of printing techniques including monotype, collagraphs, and letterpress, as well as textiles and ceramics.

Don't miss the opportunity to meet the artists, chat with them about their work, and get a peek into their printmaking processes. Drop in any time between 12-2pm on Saturday, March 30th.

Whodunit? is a series of thirty-six unique monoprints combining the processes of lithography and screenprint. The imagery is of the six murder weapons from the Parker Brothers® board game Clue®. Beyond developing one’s skills of reasoning, examination, and determination, Clue introduced the concepts of deceit, suspicion, and murder to children. This series highlights the somewhat lightheartedness that was awarded to the act of murder and how it was portrayed in a family board game. Each weapon is depicted in six different colorways. Using a different color combination for each of the six characters from the game, each weapon icon is given different emotion, weight, and presence.

Opening Reception: March 2

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Artworks Center for Contemporary Art

310 N. Railroad Avenue, Loveland, CO 80537

As a Chicano artist my identity, cultural and geographic backgrounds are integral in my art.  For numerous artists and myself these experiences, our cultural hybridity, becomes a foundation in our artwork, addressing the distinctions between the worlds we experience or ways that they combine them to form a new outlook of our identity. We live in a world that is constantly on the move with the ease of travel across long distances. People move between places and cultures either as an immigrant, refugees, workers, tourists or the blurring of geographic borders. This cultural hybridity has been a theme in my body of work since I first ventured into the fascinating field of art.  With art, I can address the differences in my world, forming a new and more accurate outlook of my personal and cultural identity.

Buell Theatre Lobby

Denver Performing Arts Complex, 1400 Curtis St, Denver, CO, 80204

A Colorado artist whose family goes back 16 generations, Emilio Lobato has a large collection of creations spanning his 30-year career. While also well known for his paintings, with artwork included in galleries across the United States, he has also gained notoriety for his classic, calm, serene printworks. His prints are intriguing because of his sensitivity to the paper he uses in his work, often including antique, handmade and found paper, as well as new. His unique use of margins draws the viewer to focus more intently on the print, inspiring a sense of melancholy and contemplation.

Join Shanna Shelby, curator of exhibitions for Denver Arts & Venues, and master printmaker Emilio Lobato from 2-4 p.m. on March 3 for an opening reception including a guided tour and discussion of "Solo en Papel: 30 Anos de Grabados” on display in the Buell Theatre lobby January 20-April 7.

The portfolio was created to help begin a conversation on many levels about missing and murdered indigenous women. The images from all the women artists act as an advocacy for change and for voicing the dark present history. What we believe connects us in our support of our sisterhood to be safe and healthy. We want to help further a conversation on many levels as women supporting each other. And as Women, we all have had our individual and collective experiences in keeping our bodies and families safe. Open during business hours through 4/12/24.

Power to the Print

Opening Reception: March 8

6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

BRDG Project Gallery

3300 Tejon St, Denver, CO, 80211

Since the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century, printmaking has provided the means for wide circulation and accessible communication of progressive and democratic ideals. During democracy movements around the world, it has been printmakers who have helped get the word out. As an inexpensive, accessible, and participatory medium, hand pulled prints have the power to promote social change. Power to the Print, a month-long group exhibition at the BRDG gallery in Denver unites a diverse group of Colorado artists who use print media as a tool for social change. These artists engage with ideas of decolonization, social and restorative justice, equality, resistance and interconnected solidarity around the world.

Gems of the West Glimpses of Reality

Opening Reception: March 8

5:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Core Art Space

6501 W. Colfax Ave., Lakewood, CO, 80211

In my continuing series “Gem of the West Glimpses of Reality,” I am offering altered landscapes for the viewer to negotiate a dialog between what is known or visible and what is unknown. When the viewer recognizes the landscape as something they have interacted with in the past and how it has affected their senses currently. Or the viewers reaction is based on something seen in the print but not recognized that triggers a response based on how the conscious, subconscious or the unconscious has reacted to the stimulus of the print. I have focused on the multiple pigment transfer printing process. This style of printmaking uses a method of transfer where by a digital image is printed on a substrate and then that image is transferred onto paper. I print on Masa acid free paper. Enjoy

On view March 8 through March 24, 2024.

Megan's exhibition showcases three distinct art directions that collectively form her theme: altered figures, altered viewpoints of the West, and the transformative impact of struggle.

Chris Hoehle is a sculptural artist who specializes in woodturning. I Don't Think I'm Supposed To Be Here

On view March 11 through March 22

Visual Arts Center, 3rd Floor

1085 18th St., Boulder, CO, 80302

The works in this exhibition showcase the separation of my two identities: a White presenting woman and an Indigenous woman. These two identities have remained separate for most of my life, and many of my feelings of not belonging anywhere have stemmed from the dichotomy they present in my life. This exhibition is the beginning of filling the gaps between those two parts of my identity, meshing the duality of myself together in the hopes of making one whole person a true singularity. The exhibition, like myself, is bisected into these two halves; mixing beadwork practices and weaving on both sides to make one cohesive show.

On view March 11 through March 22, 2024.

Ephemera: Lo Que Queda

Opening Reception: March 14

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

O'Sullivan Art Gallery

3333 Regis Blvd., Denver, CO, 80221

This exhibition delves into the literal ephemera of what remains from printmaking, and other materials that are used to create prints. Being an artist, means battling with hoarding of materials for that one day, as well as knowing how to create finished prints in an editionable and consistent way. In that pursuit you are left with drawings/paintings (to figure out color schemes), aluminum plates, markers, pieces of wood, etc. These can be discarded into an already saturated ecological environment via landfills, or in this case save them to create an aesthetic quality related to the supplies, and a constant conceptual examination. This investigation into materials and research is using assemblage to relate the existential sense of being and iconography as a tool to inform the viewer about biographical narratives.

Artist Talk: March 21, 7:00 PM
This will be an opportunity for the public to learn about the formal process of Flores' art ideation, research and the fruition of Ephemera. This artist talk will elaborate on the aesthetics, conceptuality, symbolism, and biographical narrative approach of Javier Flores' body of work.

Draw Your Path

Opening Reception: March 21

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Leyden Jar Gallery

1460 Leyden St, Denver, CO 80220

These works are illustrations. Working from a preexisting story I draw my interpretation of its meaning. There are elements that must be included, but how they are included is up to me. And how you as the viewer ascribe their meaning is up to you. Ironically I don't much believe in tarot. there is no power in the cards. The power comes from you as the viewer being allowed to access the full breadth of your emotion and experience through the card. The belief in magic is the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down. So when you look at the cards, let them reveal to you what you have already known, and if it feels like a magical coincidence, then that's all the more fun.

Fruitful Debris

On view March 25 through April 5

Visual Arts Complex, University of Colorado, Boulder, King Family Cases, Third Floor

1085 18th St, Boulder, CO, 80302

I am an avid gardener. The yard I care for is a place where giving and receiving is continuous yearlong.  Every fall, I collect yard debris that has been discarded by my neighbors and feed it to my compost pile. This series of multilayered monotypes was created using discarded decorative grasses and alley trash such as plastic bags and food wrappers from my neighborhood. I wanted to capture the still-fruitful nature of these plants as they began to decompose. After printing was complete, these materials were added to the compost; food for earthworms this winter, and a vegetable garden in the spring.

On view March 25 through April 5, 2024.

Discovering Humanity Part II: The Fenced Farm

Opening Reception: March 29

5:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Core Art Space Gallery

6501 W. Colfax Ave., Lakewood, CO, 80214

After Humanity was Discovered by Camie Rigirozzi, she realized that neglecting to establish boundaries with the people in her life forced her to feel more pain than she wanted. The animal imagery that drove Camie’s last art exhibit is again the vehicle she uses to describe what it means to have boundaries between herself and those around her. She learned that emotional boundaries are how we keep our deepest selves safe while moving through this world. Building on her radical use of mixed media collage and utilizing gel plate mono printing with photo transfer techniques, Camie explores the idea of farm animals, fenced and safe from hurting each other. Camie is pleased to participate in Mo’Print (Month of Printmaking) with this exhibit.

Secondary Reception: April 5, 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM

On view March 29 through April 14, 2024.

Overwhelming Nature - Raymundo Muñoz

Opening Reception: April 6

6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Leon Gallery

1112 E. 17th Ave., Denver, CO, 80218

In Overwhelming Nature, Denver-based printmaker Raymundo Muñoz presents a selection of linocut relief prints inspired by the oppressive density of the natural world. Through heavy use of detail, repetitive elements, and complex organic patterns and forms, the artist invites viewers to experience a sense of awe, not only in nature, but in the art form itself. Based on his own photos, Munoz's flora, fauna, and landscapes are expressed through intense linework inspired by printmakers, illustrators, and comic book artists alike. The graphic results reveal as much the artist's love of line as his interest in the vast and wild settings and processes all around us. Among the sheer bigness and quantities suggested, though, quiet visual cues throughout Overwhelming Nature remind us that we don't have to understand and hold it all in. It's okay to simply witness, and walk away.

Artist talk : Sunday, April 28, 2 PM

On view April 6 through May 18, 2024.
