It was originally inspired by The New York Times “Overlooked” series, which since March of 2018 has been sharing the stories of remarkable people who were overlooked by the Times’ obituaries in the past.

Inherited Impressions

West + Main (Old Town Fort Collins)
1 Old Town Square Suite 103, Fort Collins, CO, 80524
Inherited Impressions is a cohesive body of printmaking work that explores lineage, cultural inheritance, and the act of remembering through the hand. Working primarily in woodcut, with select Tetra Pak intaglio prints, Liz Ortiz uses carving as both a physical and symbolic process, where each mark becomes a record of labor, memory, and intention.
Drawing from Mexican visual traditions and personal familial history, the exhibition presents figures, patterns, and symbols that reflect heritage as something carried forward rather than fixed in the past. Scale, repetition, and materiality play a central role, emphasizing the relationship between body, memory, and printmaking as a time-based practice.
Through the layered process of carving and printing, Inherited Impressions honors ancestry while allowing space for reinterpretation and growth. Each print functions as an imprint of presence, acknowledging the ways heritage is inherited, remembered, and continually reimagined through creative practice.
Liz Ortiz is a Fort Collins-based printmaker and the founder of Mad Hare Press. Working primarily with woodcut, linocut, and Tetra Pak intaglio techniques, her practice explores identity, belonging, and cultural memory through bold imagery and tactile materials. Ortiz’s work often draws from personal and ancestral narratives, using printmaking as a method of preservation and storytelling. Through accessible printmaking practices and community-centered art making, she is committed to honoring process, lineage, and shared history.

Their practices include deliberate explorations of how forms accumulate, repeat, and transform through patient, hand-driven processes. Through iterations and repetitions, pairs and symmetries, their pieces navigate the tension between organic and geometric forms. "Pressing Matters" brings together a dynamic mix of collaborative and individual works that highlight the urgency of our shared cultural moment. Curated by Carlos Frésquez and Grace Gutierrez of Los Fantasmas Artist Collective, the exhibition features works created atop screen-printed images by Carlos Frésquez, inviting artists from all backgrounds and mediums to respond, transform, and build upon his iconic visual language. Alongside these collaborations, will be a small prints showcase featuring a wide range of makers whose voices reflect the richness of Chicano/a/x, Latino, Indigenous, Queer, and other Denver communities. Rooted in dialogue and the politics of the present, Pressing Matters describes how printmaking becomes both a tool and a testimony, pressing us to see, feel, and act!

Karen Wharton’s vibrant abstract paintings integrate her monoprint collages, created with Gelli Plates and a variety of experimental printing techniques. A retired eye doctor, she traded her ophthalmoscope for paintbrushes and now brings the same keen sense of observation to her art.

Last summer I took a reset in my creative process. A way to find myself, or to find new versions of myself. Through a series of mono prints and types, I found new mental trails to explore. Each piece took me on its own gentle path- finding stretches of color, texture, and points of light I hadn't visited in some time. In making this work I realized all the subtle ways printmaking informs the way I create.
Ecosystems feels like an apt name because:
A: these different creative paths felt like new worlds opening up.
and
B: its the name of a diptych from this series.
Join us for the opening April 2nd and get a little lost with me.

Nevruz

Magnolia Street Art Space: Gülsen Göksel
6600 E 74th Ave, Commerce City, CO, 80022
Nowruz is the name of a series of photograms inspired by the celebration of renewal and new beginnings. This printmaking project, toned with the shadows of plants, began with the desire to create a celebratory project in collaboration with friends living in two different countries. We connected through a video composed of my photographic series and a lament played alongside a sculptural performance. The lament was written by a mother who lost her son, and I added my self-portrait holding a rocket root that I gathered from the garden. This root represents death but also brings new life. I took all the plants with their roots and printed photograms that reflect the meaning of Nowruz, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness.
ARTIST TALK: April 26, 7 PM
